Sweet Memories

JOHOR BARU: The 100 cakes for the Teachers Day celebration were long enough to form a 60m line from the canteen to the multipurpose hall of Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar here.
The sweet gesture by the students, was in fact more far reaching – it touched the hearts of the 130 teachers.
The ceremony was also in honour of their headmaster Zulkipli Mahmud who will retire at the end of the year.

“I feel overwhelmed,” said Zulkipli. “I will hold this close to my heart for years to come,” said Zulkipli, who has been teaching for 33 years.
Head boy Kavin Rajh, 17, said the creative idea was suggested by the students themselves. “The teachers stood at either side of the cake line.
“They then cut the cake together,” he said, adding that they wanted to do something special that the headmaster would not forget.
Biology teacher Haslawati Mohd Saleh, 36, said the event was the grandest Teachers Day celebration she had seen since she started teaching in the school more than 10 years ago.
“It is also our way of saying thank you to our headmaster for doing such a great job all these years,” she said.
Another student, Edwin Ho, 16, said that it was great to see his teachers having fun.
“It was a nice change.”
The cakes, weighing 1.5kg each, were from Season Confectionary and Bakery. Its sales and marketing manager Caren Tan said the cakes were made by 11 bakers in 12 hours.
“They started baking the cake at 2am the day before and then decorated it with yellow and green icing – the colours of the school.
